UW-Oshkosh II Wins Seventh Straight WVC State Championship (4-4-16)
After seeing its undefeated regular season record go away earlier in the day, the UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team dominated the bracket portion of the WVC State Championship to take home its seventh straight WVC Division II state championship crown on Saturday (April 2) in Milwaukee.
UW-Oshkosh II, (32-6 / 13-1 WVC) ranked #2 in the latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division III pool, defeated Concordia University 25-15, 25-12 in the quarterfinals, UW-Whitewater II 25-11, 25-15 in the semifinals and swept UW-Oshkosh III 25-20, 25-18 in the finals. It was the first time that both UW-Oshkosh teams in the WVC Division II met in the finals.
In the win over Concordia University Wisconsin the Titans were led by Michael Starzec (Sr. - Buffalo Grove, Ill.) with eight kills and two solo blocks. Adam Landgraf (Sr. - Kenosha) passed out 30 assists and the left side hitting duo of Tony Mack (Jr. - Muskego) and John Collins (Fr. - New Berlin) each had six kills.
In its win over UW-Whitewater II, the Titans were led by Mitch Lahmann (Sr. - Wauwatosa) and Mack who had five kills each. Landgraf provided 19 assists and Starzec had four blocks.
In the championship match Mack led the Titans offensive barrage with seven kills as UW-Oshkosh III had 26 kills in the match. Landgraf dished out 20 assists, Alex Harty (Jr. - Racine) had eight digs and Starzec had eight blocks. Lahmann totaled two service aces and Collins had five kills and four blocks.
"We are a very deep team that has a lot of experience on the court," said head coach Will Brydon. "We have highly talented players in each position and made it a goal to work hard every point of every practice and every match."
Landgraf was awarded the tournament most valuable player for his role in leading the Titans to the championship. Harty and Braeden Melton (Sr. - Beloit) were also named the six-member all-tournament team.
