UW-Oshkosh III Reaches WVC Division II Title Match (4-4-16)
The UW-Oshkosh III men's volleyball team reached the title match of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division II for the first time in history before losing to UW-Oshkosh II 25-20, 25-18 on Saturday (April 2) in Milwaukee.
Entering as the number two seed overall do to their second place result in the regular season, UW-Oshkosh III (19-7 / 12-2 WVC) dominated Carroll University II 25-11, 25-14 and then beat Marquette University II 26-24, 25-12 to reach the match against their fellow Titans.
Michael Skora (Fr. - Salem) led the Titans with nine kills in 12 errorless attempts in the quarterfinals. Joey Mack (Fr. - Muskego) provided four kills and two service aces and Alex Basting (Fr. - Franklin) had five service aces and four digs. Danny Mirda (So. - Brookfield) had two service aces and Matt Pedersen (Fr. - Muskego) dished out 18 assists and had two service aces.
The Titans hit .513 in the match and added 13 service aces to overwhelm the Pioneers.
UW-Oshkosh III stormed back from a 21-11 deficit against Marquette University II to take the opening set 26-24 and then coasted from there to reach the title contest.
Tony D'Acquisto (Fr. - Franklin) slammed down eight kills and added two blocks and Basting contributed seven kills to lead the comeback. Pedersen distributed 18 assists and had three solo blocks, Joe Kuchler (Jr. - Muskego) had a team-leading eight digs and Skora amassed four kills, two service aces and three blocks.
In the championship match UW-Oshkosh III could not match the fire power of UW-Oshkosh II in falling in straight sets. Earlier in the day UW-Oshkosh III defeated UW-Oshkosh II in three-sets to hand their teammates their only loss in the regular season race.
Skora led the team with seven kills and Pedersen ran the offense with 17 assists and added one solo block. The Titans did not record a service ace in the contest and were limited to two blocks.
"We didn't play as well as we would have liked in the championship match but we can't be disappointed in our weekend," said head coach Kurt Breier. "We made some team history with a talented, dedicated group of guys and we are looking forward to making some noise at our first appearance in the national championship tournament for the UW-Oshkosh III team."
Kuchler and Skora were named to the six-member WVC Division II all-tournament team for their efforts during the tournament.
"It is fitting that both Joe and Mike received the award," added Breier. "Joe leads the back court and Mike leads the front court and together they led this team to unprecedented heights so far this season."
