UW-Oshkosh III Grabs Three WVC Division II First-Team Awards (4-4-16)
Helping the UW-Oshkosh III team to new heights this season, left side hitter Alex Basting (Fr. - Franklin), setter Matt Pedersen (Fr. - Muskego) and left side hitter Mike Skora (Fr. - Salem) were all named to the WVC Division II All-Conference First Team according to program head coach Brian Schaefer. The awards were announced as part of the WVC State Championship on Saturday (April 2) in Milwaukee.
"The three freshmen on our team that were recognized by their peers are the heart and soul of our team," said Schaefer. "Alex is a very impressive six-rotation player and Matt runs a great offense and is a very good defender in the back court."
UW-Oshkosh III (19-7 /12-2 WVC) captured second place in the WVC regular season with a 12-2 record and gave UW-Oshkosh II its only loss in conference action. The Titans' second place finish is the best in the history of the UW-Oshkosh III team.
Skora also led the WVC Division II in service aces per set and kills per set and Joe Kuchler (Jr. - Muskego) led the league in digs per set.
"Skora has taken his game to a whole new level in the last couple of weeks of the season," said head coach Kurt Breier. "He is our go-to player on offense, but we also rely on him for passing, tough jump serving and being able to shut down the right side attack when blocking."
"Joe is our emotional leader and has done a good job making the team believe they can compete with anybody," stated Breier. "He is a great libero and I am not surprised that he led the conference in digs."
"The future is bright for the Titans program," added Schaefer. "The UW-Oshkosh III team has a roster of six freshmen, including five that start so for them to challenge for the conference title is very impressive."
