UW-Oshkosh III Makes Noise at MIVA Play Date (3-27-16)
The UW-Oshkosh III men’s volleyball team won all three of its matches at the MIVA Championship play date on Saturday (March 26) in West Lafayette, Indiana. Due to the fact that the Titans did not participate in the regular season play dates throughout the season they were not eligible to participate in bracket play on Sunday.

UW-Oshkosh (13-5) defeated the University of Illinois II 25-21, 25-18, The Ohio State University III 21-25, 25-20, 15-13 and Michigan State University II 25-19, 25-19. All three teams that the Titans beat will be at the NCVF Division III national tournament.

Against the Illini, a perennial powerhouse in the NCVF Division III, the Titans were led by Mike Skora (Fr. – Salem) with six kills and two service aces. Sam Nelson (Fr. – Luck) had five kills on six attempts and Andrew Shea (Jr. – Brookfield) had five kills on eight attempts. Danny Mirda (So. – Brookfield) tallied two service aces and Matt Pedersen (Fr. – Muskego) dished out 20 assists and had two service aces and three blocks. Tony D’Acquisto (Fr. – Muskego) had three blocks and Joe Kuchler (Jr. – Muskego) led the team with nine digs.

After blowing a 21-18 lead in set two against the Buckeyes, UW-Oshkosh III rebounded well to take home the three set victory.

“The team responded well after giving away the first set against The Ohio State University III,” said head coach Brian Schaefer. “It was disappointing that they surrendered seven straight points, but in the end we had some great blocking and hitting in set two and three to pull out the victory.”

Skora was a beast at the net recording 12 kills on 17 attempts for a .529 hitting percentage. Pedersen dished out 27 assists and had two service aces, four digs and two blocks. Nelson had five blocks, including two solo stops and Kuchler had eight digs. The Titans had nine blocks in the last two sets.

Despite 17 hitting errors, the Titans ran past the Spartans behind tough team serving. Skora had four service aces and Mirda added three service aces. Nelson finished with six kills and three blocks, D’Acquisto tallied five kills and two blocks and Kuchler had seven digs. David Edelmann (So. – Belleville, Ill.) had five digs and Pedersen had 20 assists and four digs.
