UW-Oshkosh III Battles UW-Oshkosh II to the End (3-29-16)
The UW-Oshkosh III men's volleyball team proofed that its wins at the MIVA Championship play date were not a fluke by going five sets with 13-time regular season Wisconsin Volleyball Conference UW-Oshkosh II before falling 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 15-10 on Monday (March 28) in Oshkosh.
UW-Oshkosh III (13-6 / 8-2 WVC) remain in second place in the WVC and will enter the state championship in a second place tie with Marquette University II with four regular season matches to play.
The team was led by the outside hitting duo of Alex Basting (Fr. - Franklin) and Mike Skora (Fr. - Salem) who had 19 kills each. Sam Nelson (Fr. - Luck) provided 11 kills on 18 attempts and Tony D'Acquisto (Fr. - Franklin) added nine kills on 17 attempts. Matt Pedersen (Fr. - Muskego) dished out a career-high 54 assists and added eight digs and two blocks.
Joe Kuchler (Jr. - Muskego) scooped up 17 digs, Skora added two service aces and eight digs and Nelson had a match high seven blocks, including four solo blocks.
"The guys played so well and proved that they will be a force at the national tournament in two weeks," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "They went toe-to-toe with the second ranked team in the NCVF Division III and it was a great match to give them confidence heading into the last two tournaments of the season."
