UW-Oshkosh III Starts WVC Season Undefeated (2-7-16)
The UW-Oshkosh III men's volleyball team got off to a great start in the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division II season by going undefeated without dropping a set on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Oshkosh.
The Titans turned some heads by sweeping Marquette University II, a team that took second in the WVC Division II last season in the opening match. UW-Oshkosh III won in set scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-20.
Mike Skora (Fr. - Salem) had 13 kills on 17 attempts for a robust .647 hitting percentage and Alex Basting (Fr. - Franklin) matched Skora's kill total with 13 put downs on 20 attempts. David Edelmann (So. - Belleville, Ill.) and Joe Kuchler (Jr. - Muskego) had a team-leading five digs and Tony D'Acquisto (Fr. - Franklin) and Matt Pedersen (Fr. - Muskego) provided three blocks. Pedersen led the offense with 29 assists. The Titans struggled at the service line with 12 service errors, but the offense was on fire with 36 kills in the three sets.
In the second match of the day UW-Oshkosh III had little trouble with Concordia University Wisconsin in a 25-21, 25-14, 25-15 victory. Six Titans recorded at least three kills, led by D'Acquisto, Joe Lesko (Sr. - Brookfield), Joey Mack (Fr. - Muskego) and Skora with five each. Mack had all of his kills in only one set played.
Kuckler piled up 10 digs, Basting led the team with five blocks and Pedersen provided 24 assists, four service aces and three blocks. Danny Mirda (Jr. - Brookfield) chipped in two service aces and Edelmann had five digs.
In the final match of the play date, UW-Oshkosh III dispatched Carroll University II 25-19, 25-11, 25-11. The Titans recorded 12 kills in each of the first two sets, led by the match high 11 kills by D'Acquisto who also tallied five blocks. Basting added seven kills and two service aces, Andrew Shea (Jr. - Brookfield) and Sam Nelson (Fr. - Luck) two blocks and Skora five digs. Edelmann led the team with eight digs, Kuchler provided seven digs and Nelson finished with five kills.
