Titans Take Down #15 Golden Eagles (2-10-16)
In an early season battle between two of the top teams in the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference, the UW-Oshkosh men’s volleyball team only committed three hitting errors in a dominating 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 victory over Marquette University on Tuesday (Feb. 9) in Oshkosh.
UW-Oshkosh (12-0/3-0 WVC) entered the contest ranked #2 in the latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation poll and Marquette University sat at #15 in the country. With the victory, the Titans have now won 48 straight matches dating back to last year.
Travis Hudson (Sr. – Wauwatosa) filled the stat sheet with 33 assists, four service aces, four digs and four blocks, including three solo stuffs. Sam Moua (Jr. – Appleton) led the back court with nine digs and Alec Redlich (Sr. – Wauwatosa) led the offense with 10 kills on 14 attempts.
Tyler Range (Sr. – Kenosha) and Wesley Morioka (Sr. – Chicago, Ill.) added eight kills each and Allen Grunert (Jr. – Muskego) provided seven kills on eight attempts and stopped two attacks at the net. Eaven Mason (Fr. – Milwaukee) added five blocks and Michael Wamboldt (Jr. – Pleasant Prairie) had four digs.
“We played an awesome match tonight,” said head coach Brian Schaefer. “We passed and played very good defense which led to easy match-ups for our hitters. Although we missed a lot of serves, we were able to keep their high powered offense in check.”
The UW-Oshkosh II men’s volleyball team overcame a first set deficit to take the opening stanza and then rolled from there for a 25-23, 25-13, 25-21 victory over Marquette University II on Tuesday (Feb. 9) in Oshkosh.
The Titans found themselves down 15-11 before coming back to knot the score at 21-21. From there UW-Oshkosh got a block by Braeden Melton (Sr. – Beloit) and Tony Mack (Jr. – Muskego) and relied on two hitting errors and a kill by Zach Tazalla (Jr. – Whitefish Bay) to take the early lead.
Set two was never close as the Titans racked up 14 kills and six kills to take a commanding 2-0 advantage. Michael Starzec (Sr. – Buffalo Grove, Ill.) had five kills and six blocks to lead the Titans.
For the match the Titans was led by Mitch Lahmann (Sr. – Wauwatosa) with eight kills, while adding three blocks. Starzec ended the contest with seven kills and a career-high 10 blocks and Adam Landgraf (Sr. – Kenosha) just missed a double-double with 30 assists and nine digs. Alex Harty (Jr. – Racine) added eight digs and Mack finished with six kills. The Titans did not have a receiving error in the match.
