UW-Oshkosh Wins Opening Tournament in Michigan (1-25-16)
The UW-Oshkosh men’s volleyball team started the 2016 campaign by capturing the University of Michigan Classic on Saturday (January 23) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. UW-Oshkosh (5-0), the two-time defending National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division I national champion, did not drop a set in the tournament.

The Titans got things started by defeating Baldwin-Wallace University 25-14, 25-10, University of Michigan II, 25-18, 25-7 and Butler University 25-10, 25-20 to win its opening pool.

Alec Redlich (Sr. – Wauwatosa) led the Titans against the Yellow Jackets with seven kills and Travis Hudson (Sr. – Wauwatosa) dished out 20 assists and had two service aces and three blocks. Wesley Morioka (Sr. – Chicago, Ill.), Tyler Range (Sr. – Kenosha) and Eaven Mason (Fr. – Milwaukee), making his college debut each had five kills. The Titans hit .418 on 25 kills.

Hudson led the team against the Wolverines with 17 assists, seven kills and four blocks, including two block solos. Mason added four kills and four blocks and Sam Moua (Jr. – Appleton) led the team with five digs. The Titans finished the match with a robust .588 hitting percentage.

Grunert and Redlich provided the offensive punch against the Bulldogs with eight and seven kills, respectively as the Titans hit .525 in the easy win. Hudson led the Titans with 18 assists and Mike Wamboldt (Jr. – Pleasant Prairie) picked up five digs. Grunert and Range topped the team with three blocks and Hudson and Morioka each had two service aces.

Led by Morioka’s eight kills, the Titans hit .552 on 25 kills in a 25-16, 25-19 victory over Grand Valley State University to start the playoffs. In a balanced attack, Hudson and Mason each had four kills and John Collins (Fr. – New Berlin), Allen Grunert (Jr. – Muskego) and Redlich each put down three attempts.

Hudson led the offense with 20 assists and three blocks and Mason and Redlich each had two service aces.

In the championship match the Titans were pushed to the limit in a close 28-26, 25-22 win over #14 University of Notre Dame. UW-Oshkosh relied on offense balance as Grunert, Morioka and Relich each had six kills. Mason added five kills and Wamboldt added a team leading five digs. Hudson led the team with 22 assists and added four kills and four digs. The Titans only had one missed serve in the contest.
