UW-Oshkosh Wins Hoosier-Illini Classic (2-26-13)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team won the Hoosier-Illini Classic for the first time since the 2007 season by going 8-0 over the two-day event held on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 23-24) in Bloomington, Indiana. The event, which is hosted by Indiana University and the University of Illinois, featured nine teams ranked in the top 25 in the latest Division I NCVF national poll. UW-Oshkosh (25-1), which has now won 20 straight matches, started off pool play with sweeps of 25-23, 25-13 over Adrian College, 25-14, 25-13 over Northwestern University and 25-13, 25-20 over #19 University of Florida. Bill Meidenbauer (Sr. - Waukesha) led the Titans with 12 kills on 14 attempts in the opening match against Adrian College. Wesley Morioka (Fr. - Chicago) added four service aces, Bob Hall (Sr. - Appleton) collected three service aces and Jordan Mattingly (Sr. - Kaukauna) scooped up six digs. Jake Ahnert (So. - Burlington) contributed four kills and two blocks and Travis Hudson (Fr. - Wauwatosa) had 20 assists. Nick Mueller (Sr. - Kenosha) and Dan Ruys (Gr. - Kimberly) led the Titans in the win over the Wildcats with eight kills each. Ruys added five blocks and Mattingly had four service aces. Hudson paced the offense with 19 assists and Shane Heyrman (So. - Green Bay) provided four kills and two blocks. The outside hitting duo of Meidenbauer and Mueller provided the offense in the win over the Gators with 10 kills on only 14 attempts each. Meidenbauer owned the net with four blocks and Hudson had 20 assists and four digs. Mattingly also scooped up four digs. In the last match on Saturday the Titans defeated in-state rival #13 University of Wisconsin 25-22, 25-22 behind the 10 kills of Meidenbauer. Morioka dialed up four digs and one service ace and Hudson ran the offense with 23 assists as the Titans racked up a total of 29 kills in the match. Ruys added six kills on eight attempts and had two solo blocks. Opening single elimination play on Sunday, UW-Oshkosh received a gift from the University of Missouri when they didn't show up for their officiating duties in a 25-0, 25-17 win over the Tigers. The Titans did record 15 kills in the second set in the victory after winning the first set via forfeit. In a rematch of the 2011 Division I NCVF championship, UW-Oshkosh came back from down one set and a 21-15 deficit in set two to squeak out a 22-25, 25-23, 15-8 win over #12 University of Notre Dame. The Titans nearly squeaked out the first set despite committing six receiving errors and eight serving errors. Facing an early exit in the tournament the Titans came back in the second set behind the serve of Hall and Mueller to close the gap before kill by Ahnert tied the contest. The deciding stanza was all UW-Oshkosh as Mueller recorded two of his three service aces in the set. Meidenbauer, Mueller and Ruys all finished with nine kills. Ruys hit .800 in the contest while adding four blocks. Hudson paced the offense with a tournament high 29 assists and had a team best six digs. In the semifinals against #9 ranked The Ohio State University the Titans did not have a receiving error in a 25-22, 25-19 sweep over the Buckeyes. After a close first set, UW-Oshkosh build leads of 10-1 and 17-6 before finishing off the match. Hudson dished out 24 assists and Mueller put down 10 kills. Meidenbauer had six kills and Ahnert and Ruys each had five in the contest. In the championship match against UW-Milwaukee the Titans beat the Panthers for the second time this year in a 25-15, 25-21 sweep. UW-Oshkosh relied on 10.5 team blocks to shut down UW-Milwaukee. Ahnert, Meidenbauer and Ruys each had four blocks and Mueller led the Titans with seven kills. Hudson again led the Titans with 19 assists and added four kills and Ruys collected six kills. For the weekend Mueller led the team with 58 kills on a .412 hitting percentage. Mueller added six service aces, 10 digs and five blocks. Meidenbauer chipped in 53 kills, including three matches of more than 10 put downs, while adding 14 blocks and nine digs. Ruys paced the middle attack with 45 kills on a .623 hitting percentage while topping the team with 22 blocks. Hudson tallied 163 assists and 17 assists, Ahnert pitched in 14 blocks and 26 kills on a .537 hitting percentage and Mattingly led the team with 21 digs. Morioka led the team with seven service aces for the tournament and picked up 12 digs in seeing libero duties for the first time this season.
