UW-Oshkosh Finishes Second at Mountain West Conference Invitational (1-19-13)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team opened its 2013 campaign with a second place finish at the Las Vegas Invitational hosted by the Mountain West Conference on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 17-18) in Las Vegas. UW-Oshkosh (5-1) swept its first five opponents before dropping the championship match to the University of Arizona in dramatic fashion, 26-24, 24-26, 16-14. The Titans opened up play with victories of 25-19, 25-22 over Utah Valley University, 25-11, 25-10 over Weber State University and 25-16, 25-15 over Arizona State University to maintain the number one seed after pool play. UW-Oshkosh captured wins of 28-26, 25-19 against Utah State University in the quarterfinals and 25-11, 25-23 over the University of Colorado in the semifinals before falling to the Wildcats. In his first collegiate match, Travis Hudson (Fr. - Wauwatosa) led the Titans with 16 assists and two service aces against Utah Valley University. Jordan Mattingly (Sr. - Kaukauna) added seven digs and Nick Mueller (Sr. - Kenosha) two blocks. UW-Oshkosh was paced by Jake Ahnert (So. - Burlington) with five kills and three blocks in the thrashing of Weber State University. Hudson pitched in 16 assists and three blocks and Mattingly had three service aces. Bill Meidenbauer (Sr. - Waukesha) led the Titans with seven kills and Dan Ruys (Gr. - Kimberly) finished with six in the victory over Arizona State University. Mattingly picked up six digs and Hudson paced the offense with 22 assists while adding two service aces. On the second day of competition UW-Oshkosh overcame nine hitting errors in the first set to take down Utah State University. Ruys finished with seven kills and eight blocks, Meidenbauer with six kills, four digs and three service aces and Hudson 22 assists and six blocks. Meidenbauer came up big at the net with 10 kills and two solo blocks in the sweep over the University of Colorado. Mattingly scooped up six digs and Ahnert had three blocks. Wesley Morioka (Fr. - Chicago) provided a serving spark in a close second set with two service aces and Mueller had eight kills and two service aces. After losing a tight first set, the Titans came back from an 18-12 deficit in set two to force a deciding three stanza. Again trailing 14-11 in the third set, UW-Oshkosh came back to tie the score 14-14 before giving up two straight points. Meidenbauer led the Titans with 14 kills and six digs. Ahnert tacked on three blocks and Hudson dished out 24 assists and had three service aces and two blocks. Mueller finished with seven kills and two service aces. "As a team we saw some good things on the weekend and we figured out what we needed to work on as well," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "Our passing let us down against the University of Arizona and they were able to set up a great defense against our left side hitters. I was pleased that we came back in both sets but unfortunately we did not pull it out in the end."
