Oshkosh II Dominates at the 2012 WVC State Championships (4-1-12)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team won its seventh Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division II state championship by sweeping all six of its opponents on Friday and Saturday (March 30-31) in Oshkosh. The Titans also won the regular season conference title for a tenth consecutive year earlier in the season. UW-Oshkosh II, who has not lost to anybody from the state of Wisconsin in two seasons, started off pool play by dominating UW-Whitewater II 25-13, 25-12, Northland International University 25-15, 25-19 and UW-Fond du Lac 25-6, 25-15. Brandon Wagner (Fr. - Mukwonago) led the Titans with seven kills on nine attempts against the Warhawks. Will Brydon (Sr. - Northbrook, Ill.) added six kills, Bob Hall (Jr. - Appleton) provided 24 assists and Mitch Lahmann (Fr. - Wauwatosa) added two solo blocks. Wagner again led the Titans in kills with seven in the win over the Pioneers. Hall had 20 assists, four digs and two solo blocks, Lahmann added five kills and seven digs and Tyler Wiedenhoeft (Fr. - Mequon) picked up six digs. In the victory over UW-Fond du Lac, Sean Murphy (Fr. - Mukwonago) dished out 19 assists, Patrick Phillips (Jr. - Delafield) had five kills and two blocks and Wagner added seven kills. UW-Oshkosh II started off bracket play on Saturday with a 25-15, 25-16 win over UW-Platteville II. Hall ran the offense with 17 assists, Wagner had seven kills and two blocks and Phillips had three service aces. In the semifinals the Titans squared off against Moody Bible Institute (Ill.), a team that placed second in the regular season standings. After trailing in set one 5-1, UW-Oshkosh II rolled into the finals with a 25-19, 25-19 victory over the Lancers. Matt Maciejewski (Sr. - Greenfield) tallied 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Wiedenhoeft had eight digs and Wagner added five kills and four blocks. Andrew Nett (Sr. - Fond du Lac) had four kills and three blocks and Hall collected 20 assists. In the championship match UW-Oshkosh II allowed a team to score over 20 points for the first time and had to rally in the second set to prevail 25-18, 27-25 over upstart Northland International University. After the easy first set win, the Titans found themselves down 23-19 before Hall scored five straight points for the Titans on his serve for a 24-23 advantage. After trading points for four serves, Steve Brunelli (Sr. - Greenfield) ended the match on a kill. Brydon shined in the final tallying 10 kills on 13 attempts. Brunelli finished with seven kills and Nett had five as the Titans slammed down 32 kills in the match. Wagner had five blocks, Hall four blocks and Brunelli added three. Hall finished with 27 assists and Wiedenhoeft had a team-leading five digs. Brydon was named the tournament most valuable player for the second consecutive season for his efforts during the two-day event. Wagner and Hall were also named to the all-tournament team.
