Oshkosh II Finishes Second at the University of Iowa Spring Challenge (3-5-12)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team took National Collegiate Volleyball Federation #16 ranked University of Missouri to three sets before losing in the championship match of the 18-team University of Iowa Spring Challenge on Saturday and Sunday (March 3-4) in Iowa City, Iowa. UW-Oshkosh II (25-3) won all six matches leading up to the title bout, including an earlier sweep of the Tigers in pool play. The Titans started the tournament on Saturday with a 25-15, 25-11, 25-10 shellacking of St. Olaf College (Minn.) and a 21-25, 25-11, 25-23 victory over St. Ambrose University II (Iowa) in their initial pool placement. UW-Oshkosh finished up Saturday's action with a 25-22, 25-23 win over the University of Missouri and a 25-16, 22-25, 15-12 clincher over the host University of Iowa. In Sunday's single elimination bracket UW-Oshkosh swept the De Paul University (Ill.) 25-20, 25-20, survived against the College of DuPage (Ill.) 15-18, 23-25, 15-2 and lost to the Tigers 28-30, 25-19, 15-12. For the tournament, Matt Maciejewski (Sr. - Greenfield) led the Titans with 54 kills and 12 service aces. Bob Hall (Jr. - Appleton) dished out 179 assists and chalked up 14 digs, 10 service aces and 12 blocks, including seven solo stuffs. Andrew Nett (Sr. - Fond du Lac) and Brandon Wagner (Fr. - Mukwonago) each tallied 45 kills and Tyler Wiedenhoeft (Fr. - Mequon) scooped up 33 digs. Will Brydon (Sr. - Northbrook, Ill.) had 28 kills and 10 blocks, Wagner finished with 13 blocks and hit .450 on the weekend and Steve Brunelli (Sr. - Greenfield) tallied 26 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks. Wagner led the Titans against St. Olaf College with eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage. Maciejewski added six kills, and Eric Brandenburg (Jr. - Elgin, Ill.), Brunelli and Nett each had four. Hall finished with 24 assists and three service aces, Wiedenhoeft six digs and Mitch Lahmann (Fr. - Wauwatosa) three service aces against the Oles. Maciejewski provided a team-leading 12 kills and nine digs against St. Ambrose University II. Hall totaled 30 assists and Nett and Brydon slammed down seven kills. Brunelli and Wagner each put away six hitting attempts and Wiedenhoeft had five digs in the winning cause. In the sweep of the Tigers the Titans had Wagner provide seven kills and two blocks, Brunelli five kills, three digs, two service aces and two blocks and Hall 21 assists and two solo blocks. Maciejewski, Nett and Brydon each had four kills and Brydon topped the team with three blocks. In their win over Big Ten Conference opponent the University of Iowa, Hall ran the offense with 22 assists and also added seven digs and four blocks. Nett put away eight kills, Wagner six and Brunelli and Lahmann four. Wagner also racked up three blocks and Maciejewski grabbed three service aces. In the single elimination playoffs, Wagner got the Titans started in the win over De Paul University with nine kills on 14 errorless attempts and added four blocks. His middle blocking counterpart also had a great match at the net as Brydon secured eight kills on 10 attempts for a .800 hitting percentage. Hall dished out 28 assists and had two blocks, Wiedenhoeft picked up seven digs and Maciejewski enjoyed eight kills. The Titans swept the Blue Demons despite not recording a service ace. In the semifinals against the College of DuPage the Titans relied on 11 kills and five service aces, including four in the deciding third set from Maciejewski to advance to the finals. Hall once again led the offense with 25 helpers, Wiedenhoeft picked up seven digs and Nett had seven kills on 10 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage. In the championship match the Titans were hampered by only having nine digs in the match in the three-set heartbreaker. Offensively UW-Oshkosh was paced by Nett who slammed down 11 kills, Maciejewski added 10 and Wagner five, while Hall accounted for 29 assists. Hall also recorded the only service aces in the match for the Titans with two and added two blocks.
