UW-Oshkosh Heads to Illinois for Early Season Test (2-17-12)
Regarded as a measuring stick for success at the national championship, the UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team will be tested early at the Hoosier-Illini Classic held this weekend (Feb.18-19) at the University of Illinois.
Co-hosted by Indiana University and the University of Illinois, the 32-team tournament features 12 teams currently ranked in the top-25 in latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division I poll, four receiving honorable mention votes and two ranked in the top-15 in the NCVF Division II poll.
UW-Oshkosh, (12-0) currently sits on top of the Division I poll and will open play with #19 Grand Valley State University. The Titans will conclude pool play with a match-up with the University of Illinois C and the University of Central Florida. This is the third consecutive year that the Titans will face the University of Central Florida, a team receiving votes in an early Saturday battle.
"The University of Central Florida always enters this tournament under seeded and for whatever reason we get placed in the same pool," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "It is always a great match and we look forward to playing great competition right out of the gate."
After pool play the Titans will play one challenge round against another team from another pool. Based on those results, all teams are placed in either the gold or silver single elimination championship on Sunday.
"We have been stressing passing and serving in practice all season and things won't change this weekend," added Schaefer. "Those two elements led us to a national championship last season and it will put us in position for a repeat later this year."
