UW-Oshkosh Dominates WVC State Championship (4-3-11)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team swept all but one opponent on its way to its eighth WVC State Championship crown on Friday and Saturday (April 1-2) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh (48-6) opened pool play with a 25-22, 25-19 win over Marquette University, a 25-18, 23-25, 15-3 victory over Lakeland College and a 25-14, 25-17 thrashing of UW-Platteville. Bill Meidenbauer (Jr. - Waukesha) led the way against the Golden Eagles with nine kills on 12 attempts. Tyler Boddy (Sr. - New Ulm, Minn.) contributed eight kills and Nick Mueller (So. - Kenosha) and Dan Ruys (Sr. - Kimberly) each had five. Andrew Schinner (Sr. - Mequon) had 26 assists, Mueller added three service aces, Meindenbauer two solo blocks and Boddy four digs. UW-Oshkosh hit .520 as a team. In their fourth win of the year over the Muskies, Meidenbauer led the team with 11kills. Mueller added four service aces and six digs, Jordan Mattingly (Sr. - Kaukauna) collected two service aces and nine digs and Ruys recorded seven kills and six blocks. Schinner tallied 22 assists and Boddy had four blocks. Vince Odorizzi (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie) was a perfect seven for seven in kills and added four blocks in the win over the Pioneers. Bob Hall (So. - Appleton) had 20 assists and two service aces, Zack Johnson (So. - Wauwatosa) had five kills and Ruys totaled three service aces and three blocks. On Saturday, the Titans keep the ball rolling with a 25-17, 25-22 victory over UW-Stout in the quarterfinals. Odorizzi continued his torrid hitting by slamming down all eight of his kill attempts. Brian Fox (Sr. - Fond du Lac) added four digs, Hall 28 assists and Mattingly had a team-leading 10 kills. Matt Maciejewski (Jr. - Greenfield) had six kills and Odorizzi piled up three blocks. The Titan avenged their only WVC loss of the season by destroying UW-La Crosse 25-18, 25-13 to reach the WVC title match for the third straight season. The Titans hit .521 in the match led by the 10 kills of Meidenbauer, eight kills of Boddy on only nine attempts and the seven kills of Ruys. Schinner produced 25 assists and four digs and the Titans had five players with two blocks. UW-Oshkosh left little doubt on who the best time in the WVC was this season with a 25-11, 25-22 drubbing of Marquette University in the finals. Ruys connected on his first nine kill attempts to lead UW-Oshkosh. Schinner ran the offense with 17 assists and added three digs and Boddy had four digs. With the win the Titans claimed their league leading eighth WVC state championship. No other team in the conference has more than three Division I state championships. Announced after the tournament, Ruys was named the WVC state tournament most valuable player after leading the Titans to the title. Mueller and Meidenbauer were named to the six member all-tournament team. The Titans conclude their season at the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division I national championship in Houston, Texas. Action gets underway on Thursday (April 7) at Reliant Park.
