Titans Experience Tough Loss in MIVA Championship Match (3-28-11)
UW-Oshkosh couldn't quite put the finishing touches on its second straight Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship by finishing two points shy against Indiana University in the finals on Sunday (March 27) in Columbus, Ohio. UW-Oshkosh (41-6), and ranked third in the NCVF Division I poll, lead 11-7 and 13-11 in the third set against the Hoosiers but couldn't put the match away to claim runner-up honors for the second straight tournament. The Titans also lost 15-13 in the third set at the Las Vegas Open the previous weekend. The Titans started off winning their initial pool on Saturday (March 26) by beating Baldwin-Wallace University 25-20, 25-9, University of Cincinatti 23-25, 25-20, 15-9, #25 University of Iowa 25-21, 25-20 and #4 University of Illinois 25-20, 24-26, 15-11. Jordan Mattingly (Sr. - Kaukauna) led the Titans with 10 kills on 11 attempts against the Yellow Jackets and Bob Hall (So. - Appleton) dished out 22 assists. Brian Fox (Sr. - Fond du Lac) pitched in five service aces and two service aces. The Titans relied on a spread offense against the Bearcats as five players had six or more kills in the match. Tyler Boddy (Sr. - New Ulm, Minn.) led the Titans with eight kills, Nick Mueller (So. - Kenosha) and Bill Meidenbauer (Jr. - Waukesha) added seven and Zach Johnson (So. - Wauwatos) and Dan Ruys (Sr. - Kimberly) six. Hall tallied 21 assists, Boddy, Mueller and Meidenbauer each had five digs and Vince Odorizzi (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie) had four blocks. Mattingly and Ruys again had the hot hand against the Hawkeyes with seven kills on 10 errorless attempts each. Mueller piled up four service aces, Matt Maciejewski (Jr. - Greenfield) gathered six kills and five digs and Ruys added four blocks. Hall and Andy Schinner (Sr. - Mequon) each had 10 assists. Meidenbauer led the Titans with 12 kills and six blocks, including five solo stuffs in the win over the Illini. Boddy added nine kills, Mueller collected four service aces and Ruys, Johnson and Schinner each had three blocks. Schinner led the offense with 29 assists. In bracket play on Sunday, UW-Oshkosh beat Ohio Northern University 25-12, 25-22 behind three great offensive performances by the Titans. Johnson had eight kills on nine errorless attempts, Maciejewski eight kills on 10 errorless attempts and Meidenbauer seven kills on 10 errorless attempts. Maciejewski piled up seven digs and two blocks and Hall dished out 26 assists. In the quarterfinals, UW-Oshkosh eased past Grand Valley State 25-18, 25-17. Fox scooped up eight digs, Boddy had 11 kills on 13 attempts and had two solo blocks and Schinner had 26 assists. Behind superior blocking and serving the Titans had an easier time with the University of Illinois in the semifinals than in pool play the previous day. UW-Oshkosh had nine team blocks and five service aces in the 25-18, 25-15 defeat of the Illini. Johnson led the Titans with five blocks, Ruys had four and Odorizzi three to lead the Titans charge at the net. Mueller piled up eight kills, two service aces and two blocks and Schinner had 21 assists. Fox totaled six digs and Meidenbauer had seven kills. After pulling out the first set 25-21 after being tied at 21-21, the Titans could not find the court in the second set with 11 hitting errors in a 25-21 defeat. Hitting errors again plagued UW-Oshkosh in the third set as the Titans had three after leading 13-11, eventually falling 15-13 in the heartbreaking defeat. Johnson led the Titans with 10 kills and three blocks. Boddy added three blocks, Fox eight digs and Schinner 23 assists. Midwest Ten Conference awards were announced at the MIVA Championships with the Titans reaping the benefits of winning the regular season and conference tournament titles. Meidenbauer was named to the Midwest Ten Conference second-team and Ruys was placed on the first-team. Boddy garnered most valuable player honors after being named to the first team in 2010.
