UW-Oshkosh Declaws Pointers (3-16-11)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team wrapped up at least a share of its third straight Wisconsin Volleyball Conference regular season title on Wednesday (March 16) with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-12 win over visiting UW-Stevens Point in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans can claim the outright title with a victory over Lakeland College on March 30th in Sheboygan.
UW-Oshkosh (28-4 / 12-1 WVC), ranked third in the latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation, overwhelmed UW-Stevens Point (1-10 WVC) by piling up 11 blocks and a .500 hitting percentage. The Titans, winners of 20 of their last 21 matches, have not lost to the Pointers since the 1996 season.
Matt Maciejewski (Jr. - Greenfield) led the team with 10 kills and added three blocks, including two solos. Zach Johnson (So. - Wauwatosa) added eight kills on 11 attempts, Jordan Mattingly (Sr. - Kaukauna) seven kills on nine attempts and Tyler Boddy (Sr. - New Ulm, Minn.) six kills on seven attempts.
Ryan Schultz (Sr. - Wauwatosa) collected 29 assists and two service aces, Andrew Collins (Sr. - Germantown) and Vince Odorizzi (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie) added four blocks and Eric Xiong (So. - Green Bay) had four digs. Boddy added three service aces and four digs in the winning cause.
The 2011 regular season WVC conference title is the seventh for the Titans in team history. UW-Oshkosh won the WVC Eastern Division title in 1994 and 1995, the WVC North Division crown in 2003 and WVC titles in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011 when there was only one division.
The WVC did not crown a regular season champion in 1993 and between the years of 1996-2002. Besides the seven WVC regular season titles for UW-Oshkosh, the Titans have also claimed four second place finishes in the 11 years the conference has had a regular season champion.
Before the match UW-Oshkosh took the time to honor graduating seniors Andy Collins, Ryan Schultz and public address announcer Joe Maciejewski for their dedication for the last four years.
