UW-Oshkosh II Remains Undefeated Against WVC Foes This Season (3-15-11)
With its tenth straight Wisconsin Volleyball Conference junior varsity regular season title in the books, the UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team remained undefeated against WVC foes with a 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17 non-conference win over UW-Whitewater II on Monday (March 14) in Kolf Sports Center.
UW-Oshkosh II (18-5-1), which won the regular season title with a perfect 5-0 mark at two WVC play dates earlier this season, improved to 11-0 against its in-state WVC foes.
"We have clearly established ourselves as the team to beat heading into the WVC state championships," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "Keeping our WVC regular season streak going is impressive, but we want to take home the state title as well."
Andrew Nett (Jr. - Fond du Lac) led the team with 17 kills on 20 attempts for a .700 hitting percentage to lead the Titans. "Andrew has been very impressive this season for a first year player in our program," added Schaefer. "Tonight he played a new position and still was unstoppable hitting all along the net. He really should be in the mix to take home the player of the year award in our conference."
Chris Pokrzywa (Fr. - New Berlin) added 12 kills, five digs, four service aces and three blocks and Steve Brunelli (Jr. - Greenfield) added eight kills, six digs and two service aces. Will Brydon (Jr. - Northbrook, Ill.) added six kills, Marcus Taylor (Sr. - Elmhurst, Ill.) scooped up nine digs, Eric Brandenburg (So. - Elgin, Ill.) piled up six blocks and Ryan Schultz (Sr. - Wauwatosa) dished out 37 assists.
"For a freshmen playing a new position Chris has done a great job for us in terms of doing everything well," said Schaefer. "He passes consistently, plays great middle back defense and has a solid serve. At times he has been a dominating outside hitter and we will need that offense once we get to the national tournament."
