UW-Oshkosh One Step Closer To WVC Regular Season Title (3-15-11)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team inched closer to winning the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference regular season title with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 win over third place UW-Whitewater on Monday (March 14) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh (27-4 / 11-1) holds a one match lead over UW-La Crosse (10-2 WVC) heading with two contests left on the Titans' WVC schedule. UW-Whitewater falls to 9-5 in the conference with the defeat. "We didn't play inspiring volleyball tonight but we maintained enough focus to get the job done," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "I understand that we were probably looking ahead to our trip to Las Vegas that will help determine our seed at nationals." UW-Oshkosh, the third ranked team in the latest NCVF Division I poll, has now won 19 of its last 20 matches heading into senior night on Wednesday (March 16) against UW-Stevens Point. If the Titans can get past the Pointers they will at least share the WVC regular season title. "Our team has high aspirations on a national level this season, but in order to accomplish that objective we can't look to far ahead," added Schaefer. "We have a lot of goals to obtain before we get on that plane to Houston." Dan Ruys (Sr. - Kimberly) led the team with 15 kills on 18 attempts and added six blocks. Zach Johnson (So. - Mequon) added seven kills and two blocks and Gus Odorizzi (Sr. - Pleasant Prairie) pitched in three kills in only five attempts. The middle blocking trio has really stepped up their game this season. "Ruys has really been on a roll since he has gotten back from an ankle injury," said Schaefer. "Zach has been consistent all year and Vince is a force at the net blocking. It is nice to have the three best middle blockers in the conference on our team." Matt Maciejewski (Jr. - Greenfield) added seven kills, four digs and three service aces, Bob Hall (So. - Appleton) dished out 25 assists and had four digs and Andrew Schinner (Sr. - Mequon) pitched in 11 assists. Bill Meidenbauer (Jr. - Waukesha) and Tyler Boddy (Sr. - New Ulm, Minn.) each had two service aces in the winning cause.
