Oshkosh II Starts Season Strong with Lots of New Faces (1-30-11)
After a successful beginning to the season at the University of Michigan Classic, the UW-Oshkosh II team started the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference season by going 3-0 at the WVC Division II Play Date on Saturday (Jan. 29) in Dunbar. UW-Oshkosh II (7-1) defeated UW-Whitewater II 25-14, 25-14, 25-14, UW-Green Bay/St. Norbert College 25-17, 27-25, 22-25, 25-21 and Marquette University II 25-16, 25-18, 25-22. In the sweep of the Warhawks, UW-Oshkosh II was led by Chris Pokrzywa (Fr. - New Berlin) with nine kills on 13 attempts and four digs. Steve Brunelli (Jr. - Greenfield) added seven kills and four service aces, David Catoe (So. - Racine) three service aces and Erik Harke (Fr. - Appleton) five kills, three digs and two blocks. Ryan Schultz (Sr. - Wauwatosa) dished out 26 assists, Andrew Nett (Jr. - Fond du Lac) had three blocks and Will Brydon (Jr. - Northbrook, Ill.) tallied two service aces. In a tight battle with UW-Green Bay/St. Norbert College, UW-Oshkosh was paced by Harke and Brunelli who each collected 19 kills. Schultz ran the offense with 48 assists. Catoe dialed up 10 digs and two service aces, Nett amassed eight kills and five blocks and Pokrzywa had seven kills. Harke added seven digs and three solo blocks and Brunelli picked up five digs. All 11 players saw playing time in the win over the Golden Eagles with Nett pacing the Titans with nine kills. Patrick Phillips (Fr. - Delafield) added six kills and three blocks, Brydon picked up five kills and four blocks and Jordan Berget (Fr. - New Richmond) led the team with five digs. Schultz registered 34 assists and two blocks, Eric Brandenburg (So. - Elgin, Ill.) had three blocks and Pokrzywa grabbed four digs and two blocks. Next up for the Titans is the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 5) in Davenport, Iowa.
