Andrew Schinner Decides to Join Brother at UWO (11-24-06)
Andrew Schinner, a 6-0 setter from Mequon, has decided to play for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men's volleyball program announced head coach Brian Schaefer. Schinner, the brother of current UW-Oshkosh team member Chris Schinner has become the second 2007-2008 commitment for the Titans.
"One of our needs for next season is to bring in quality players at the setting position," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "Andy has a passion for the game and plays at a high level, first for his high school and second for the North Shore volleyball club."
Schinner led his Homestead High School team to an appearance in the 2006 WIAA state championship, reaching the semi-finals after beating Greenfield High School and then losing in five games to Catholic Memorial High School. Schinner had 74 assists and 13 kills in the two matches.
Playing for head coach Jay Szatkowski, Schinner piled up 799 assists, 88 kills, 76 digs, 63 service aces and 33 blocks in 96 games played to help the Highlanders to a 27-7 record and a second place conference finish.
Schinner was a member of his varsity team his sophomore, junior and senior year, earning a letter all three seasons. He was named an honorable mention all-conference selection his sophomore and junior year and landed on the second team his final campaign. Schinner wrapped up his senior year by being named to the All-state honorable mention team.
Homestead High School also reached the 2004 and 2005 WIAA state championship when Schinner was a freshman and sophomore.
Last year Schinner was a member of the North Shore junior Olympic volleyball club 17's team, one of the premier club teams in the nation. "Anytime you get a commitment from a player from North Shore you know that you will have an athlete that knows the game of volleyball," added Schaefer. "Their coaching staff is phenomenal and are very well respected."
Schinner is also a two-year varsity member of the Homestead High School bowling team and is undecided on his intended major at UW-Oshkosh. He is the son of Dan and Maureen.
"UW-Oshkosh gives me the chance to play volleyball at a high level and with my brother," said Schinner. "I've known for a while that I wanted to become a Titan and I am looking forward to playing."
In 2006 the UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team captured the NIRSA Division I national championship and went 56-1 on the season. The Titans also finished second in 2005 and fifth in 2003 and 2004. The Titans Division II team also competed at the NIRSA national championship taking home a runner-up finish in the NIRSA Division III portion of the tournament. The Titans had seven NIRSA All-Americans last season.
