UW-Oshkosh Transfer (4-30-06)
John Erickson, a 6-3 rightside hitter from UW-Whitewater has decided to transfer to UW-Oshkosh and will be a member of the 2007 team, announced head coach Brian Schaefer.
Erickson, currently a sophomore, is from Ripon, Wisconsin and played for Fox Cities Elite junior Olympic volleyball club that is now called Oshkosh Nightmares. Erickson's high school did not offer boys volleyball but has been around the sport for most of his life.
His twin sisters Allison and Melinda each had highly successful high school careers and went on to play at UW-Whitewater (1997-2001) where they advanced to two consecutive NCAA Division III national championship games and garnered WIAC All-Conference and All-American honors.
Erickson has followed in his family's footsteps and has already made his mark in the college ranks. Last season he was named to the All-WVC Freshmen Team and this season he was named to the All-WVC First-Team. In 2006 he led the Warhawks to a fourth place standing in the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference as they reached as high as sixth in the NIRSA Division I rankings.
"John is one of, if not the hardest hitters in the country," said Schaefer. "That seems like a bold statement but everybody that knows John thinks the same thing. He already is a standout player and I believe that he still has not grown to his full potential. The team and I are looking forward to having him on our side of the net next year."
Sporting a 3.85 grade point average, Erickson was also a member of the UW-Whitewater swimming and diving team and will be majoring in literature at UW-Oshkosh.
"I personally have known John's sisters for quite some time and they are both great people and come from a family that has given a lot to the sport of volleyball. It will be nice to have the family supporting Titans volleyball," added Schaefer.
"I feel that transferring will give me the best chance of being the most successful when it comes to volleyball and academics," said Erickson. "Oshkosh has been successful for a long time and I want to be a part of that tradition. I am looking forward to playing at that level and competitiveness."
