Saturday Update: Oshkosh I ran over #22 Utah this morning to advance to the quarter finals against #17 Santa Clara. Oshkosh defeated the smaller, very scrappy team in two close games 28-26 and 25-23 to advance to the semi finals against #5 Illinois, which is a rematch of last year's exciting semi final match which Oshkosh won in three games. Oshkosh I woke up after losing the first game 14-25 to come back and defeat Illinois 25-17 in the second game. The third game was a see saw battle that seemed like it would never end. In front of several hundred people, Oshkosh won 23-21 in the game to 15. Oshkosh will now face #6 University of Maryland in the National Championship match at 9:30 PM CST.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!! Despite spotting #6 University of Maryland 10 points in game one with 10 service errors, Oshkosh won 27-25. Oshkosh then went on to win game two by a score of 25-21 to capture their first Division I National Championship. Mike Semrad won the national MVP, Andrew Sederberg, Nate Sederberg and Aaron Wayne all won all-american honors. The Titans finish the season with an unheard of record of 56-1 and became the second WVC team in two years to win the title.
Oshkosh II knocked #1 University of Arizona out of the tournament and will have a rematch against #4 Cal Poly "B" in the Division III National Championship match. Oshkosh II came out flat in the championship match and struggled to find their game losing two close games 23-25 and 25-27. Oshkosh II is the Division III National Runner-up.
Other WVC schools: #7 Lakeland College fell short against a hot #5 University of Illinois and finish tied for 9th. DII #9 UW-Platteville lost to #3 Ohio Northern University in their opening match today and finished tied for 9th in Division II. #4 Marquette University defeated #2 University of Arizona in a heated three game match to advance to the semi finals against #6 Maryland. Marquette handled Maryland easily in the first game but ended up losing the next two games to finish 3rd in Division I.
Friday Update: Oshkosh I had their first test of the tourney today with UCLA. Oshkosh didn't help it's own cause by serving poorly, but pulled both games out at the end behind the power of middle blocker Mike Semrad. Their next opponent, Cal berkley, was overwhelmed by the size and power of Oshkosh and didn't put up much of a fight. Tomorrow's Gold Division Bracket starts at 11:30 AM against the hometown #22 University of Utah.
Oshkosh II lost their first game of the tournament against Cal Poly "B", but rebounded well by crushing them 15-10 in the third game. Chris Schinner had 10 kills on 13 errorless attempts in the match. Oshkosh II won their pool and advance to the semi final against #1 University of Arizona, who was upset by #3 Illinois "B".
Other WVC schools: #4 Marquette University defeated #3 Michigan State in a three game, early morning Challenge Round match. In the Gold Flight, Marquette won their first match versus #12 USC and lost to #5 Illinois in 3 games. They will face off against #15 Navy in tomorrow's Golf Bracket. #7 Lakeland College won their first match in three games against Ohio State and lost their second match in three games to Navy. Lakeland will face #5 Illinois tomorrow in the Gold Bracket. #19 UW-Whitewater lost their Challenge Round match against Texas A&M and will now play in the Silver Flight. DII #9 UW-Platteville won their Challenge Round match and will play in the Division II Gold Flight with DII #1 Air Force.
Thursday Update: Oshkosh I breezes through the first day of pool play as they won each of their games by an average of about 10 points. The only hiccup of the day was in their start against UC-San Diego where they found themselves down 6-1. They recovered nicely by going on a 24-6 run to end the first game and then thrashed them in game two to end the match. They will have to wait until tomorrow morning until they know who will be in their three team pool, but they will play at 12:30 and 1:30 tomorrow afternoon.
Oshkosh II also went undefeated on the day and had very little resistence. They served pretty poorly in the first match, with 10 missed serves in the first game alone, but held on to pull off. They also beat up on a decent Salt Lake Community College team, who defeated Division I UW-Whitewater earlier in the season. They will now have to wait until tomorrow to find out who they play, but they will play tomorrow night again.
Other WVC schools: As of right now #7 Lakeland College won their pool in a three game match against Central Florida. #19 UW-Whitewater lost a heart-breaking three game match to start the day against UC-Davis, but rebounded to beat Minnesota. They took 3rd in their pool and must play tomorrow morning in the Challenge Round to see if they will play in the Championship or the Consolation Flight. #4 Marquette University lost to Penn State in a three game match and is now forced to play #3 Michigan State tomorrow morning in the Challenge Round. Which ever team loses will not make the Championship Flight, so one of the top 4 seeds will be out. DII #7 UW-Stevens Point won it's pool today and DII #9 UW-Platteville took 2nd in their pool.
Wednesday Update: Oshkosh I enters the tournament as the #1 seed overall and will get to play early in the morning tomorrow.
