UWO Wins Sixth State Championship (4-9-06)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team won its sixth Wisconsin Volleyball Conference state championship in the last ten years going undefeated in both the regular season and at the conference tournament held Friday and Saturday (April 7-8) in Milwaukee.
Entering the tournament at 12-0 in the conference the Titans beat #6 UW-Whitewater 25-14, 25-22, #2 Lakeland College 25-23, 25-23 and #9 Marquette University 24-26, 25-21, 15-13 in pool play on Friday and UW-Platteville 27-25, 25-23 on Saturday to enter the single elimination round as the number one seed.
Highlighting the pool play matches was Nathan Sederber (So. - Racine) as he had seven kill on 10 errorless attempts and five digs against the Warhawks. Aaron Wayne (So. - New Berlin) and James Bradley (So. - Racine) each added five digs as the team had 23 in the match. Matt Lewin (Sr. - Cudahy) added three service aces and Andrew Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) dished out 23 assists.
Against the Muskies Jeff Thomas (Sr. - Madison) led the team with 11 kills on 13 kills and had a team high six digs and two solo blocks and Nathan Sederberg had seven kills on 11 attempts and added four service aces. Andrew Sederberg assisted on 31 of the team's 33 kills.
Mike Semrad (Sr. - Waukesha) led the team with 10 kills on 13 attempts against the Golden Eagles. Lewin added four blocks and eight kills and Andrew Sederberg had 35 assists.
In the match against the Pioneers Semrad and Andrew Sederberg each had six kills and Wayne had three service aces. The Titans survived the close win despite only having one block in the match.
Behind 7-4 in the first game against the Warhawks in the semifinals the Titans scored eight straight points behind the serve of Lewin to take a 12-7 lead. From there UW-Oshkosh outscored UW-Whitewater 13-9 to take the opening game. Game two was all UW-Oshkosh as they stormed out to a 15-6 lead and dismantled the Warhawks by 13 points to take the match.
The Titans had nine service aces with only five service errors and had seven blocks in the match. Semrad led the team with six kills.
UW-Oshkosh had 17 kills in the first game on 24 attempts with only four service errors. Nathan Sederberg had five kills without an error in the opening stanza. The Titans trailed the entire second game and trailed 22-19 before tying the game at 23-23. After a side out by Marquette University to take a 24-23 advantage, the Golden Eagles dug a ball and got a kill to event the match at one game each.
In the deciding third game, the Titans took complete control and led 5-0 forcing a Golden Eagles time out. UW-Oshkosh however was not really threatened and maintained at least a four point lead throughout the game. Despite only have six kills UW-Oshkosh ran away with the game and only had one hitting error in the contest.
Nathan Sederberg led the team with 12 kills on 18 attempts with only one hitting error. Lewin added eight kills and Semrad had seven kills and two blocks, both in the third game and added a career-high three service aces. Wayne scooped up five digs and Andrew Sederberg led the team's offense with 32 assists.
UW-Oshkosh continued its dominance over fellow WVC foes in the last decade. The Titans also captured WVC state championship titles in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2004. No other WVC team has more than three state titles in the 14-year history of the event.
Nathan Sederberg was named the WVC tournament most valuable player for his efforts and Andrew Sederberg and Jeff Thomas were named to the all-tournament team.
