Oshkosh II Wins State Championship Again (4-9-06)
The UW-Oshkosh men's Division II team won the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference junior varsity state championship for the third consecutive year with a convincing 25-17, 25-20 win over Northland Baptist Bible College at the WVC state championship (April 7-8) held at Marquette University.
The Titans entered the tournament as the number one seed after winning their fourth consecutive WVC regular season title. In the opening pool UW-Oshkosh II defeated UW-Platteville II 25-11, 25-17, UW-Stevens Point II 25-9, 25-14 and Northland Baptist Bible College 25-23, 25-13.
Team highlights during the first pool was a .500 team hitting percentage against the Pioneers, 17 service aces against the Pointers and 11 service aces and 23 kills against Northland Baptist Bible College.
Individually against UW-Platteville II Nathan Malewiski (Jr. - New Franken) had seven kills and three blocks and Brandon Kirkland (Sr. - Racine) added 24 assists. Every player except the libero had at least two kills for the Titans.
The Pointers were little resistance for the Titans as Kirkland had six service aces, Malewiski five service aces and five kills and Chris Schinner (Fr. - Homestead) added four service aces and five kills.
In the last pool play match the Titans were led by Phil Brace (Sr. - Madison) who had seven digs and four kills against the Pioneers. Malewiski added six kills and David Pautz (Sr. - Racine) added four kills and three service aces. Kirkland dished out 17 assists and had four digs.
In the semifinals on Saturday, UW-Oshkosh II was pushed to a third game by rival Lakeland College II before prevailing 25-18, 20-25, 15-11. After committing 10 hitting errors in game two, the Titans came back in the deciding game by posting 11 kills on 17 errorless attempts. Schinner slammed down five kills in the game.
For the match Schinner led the team with 11 kills with only one error on 17 attempts. Malewiski added eight kills and two block and Brace and Jordan Jung (Sr. - Muskego) added seven digs each. Kirkland ran the offense with 31 assists.
UW-Oshkosh II faced Northland Baptist Bible College in the championship match who had upset Marquette University II in the other semifinal. Clinging to a 17-16 lead in the opening game, the Titans went on an 8-1 run to take the first game 25-17. Malewiski put down five kills in the first game.
Tied 5-5, UW-Oshkosh went on an 8-2 run and never was threatened in the two game sweep. The Titans lead reached 10 points at 20-10 before the Titans settled for the 25-20 victory. Malewiski led the team with eight kills on 11 errorless attempts and Brace added six kills and three service aces.
All-Conference awards were plentiful for the Titans as Brace, Kirkland, Malewiski and Pautz were all named to the junior varsity First-Team. Jung was named the Libero of the Year and Schinner was named to the All-WVC Freshmen Team.
Schinner and Brandon Weimann (Sr. - Racine) were named to WVC All-tournament team and Kirkland was named the event's Most Valuable Player.
