Oshkosh III Wins Consolation Bracket (4-9-06)
The UW-Oshkosh men's Division III team won the consolation bracket of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference junior varsity state championship held on Friday and Saturday (April 7-8) on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee.

Seeded sixth to start pool play action, the Titans lost to Marquette University II 25-16, 25-19 and lost to Lakeland College II 25-21, 25-22 before beating Northland Baptist Bible College II 25-18, 25-23 to drop into the consolation division of the tournament.

Highlights during Friday's play against the Golden Eagles were Josh Groh (Sr. - Menomonee Falls) with four kills and Brian Sigrist (Sr. - West Allis) with eight digs and ten assists. Jim Hall (Fr. - Appleton) registered five kills and five digs against the Muskies and Mark Beck (Fr. - Kimberly) added five digs. Hall led the team with 10 kills and Trenton Hazen (So. - Racine) added nine kills against the Pioneers. Tony Goebel (Fr. - Fond du Lac) tallied five service aces and four digs.

In Saturday's action the Titans defeated UW-Stevens Point II 25-12, 23-25, 15-6 in the semifinals of the silver division (consolation bracket). Hall led the team again with 11 kills and Sigrist dished out 25 assists and added four service aces. Groh pitched in five kills on nine errorless attempts and Hazen had three service aces.

In the finals, the Titans defeated UW-Platteville II 25-22, 25-18, a team that had beaten them in the regular season. Hall again led UW-Oshkosh with 11 kills and Hazen added seven kills and two blocks. Goebel added eight digs and Sigrist ran the offense with 26 assists.

Tied 2-2 in the second game, Goebel rattled off seven straight serves to give the Titans an insurmountable lead as UW-Oshkosh finished the season with a 11-7 record. Sigrist was named to the WVC junior varsity First Team after previously being named the WVC junior varsity Libero of the Year in 2004.

"We did not play the best to start the tournament on Friday against Marquette University II," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "But after that we improved our game. Despite losing to Lakeland College II the match was much closer than the score indicated. If a few calls go our way we might have won the first game and then who knows what could have happened. On Saturday we just played a lot more relaxed and I am glad that Josh Groh and Justin Sanders (Sr. - Pulaski) could end their careers with a win."
