Oshkosh II Tournament Preview (4-7-06)
For the last four years the UW-Oshkosh Division II team has been the dominating team in the WVC junior varsity conference capturing regular season crowns in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and the last two state championships. Participating at the NIRSA Division III national championships the last three seasons, the Titans are not only primed for another run at the WVC state championship, but also another top four finish on the national scene after taking third in Kansas City, Missouri last year.
The Titans are led by 2005 Most Valuable Player Brandon Kirkland who was also named All-WVC Division II First Team in 2004. Nathan Malewiski, a 2005 All-WVC Division II First Team selection last season was named NIRSA Division III All-American last season, as does fellow Division III First Team All-American Jordan Jung. Jung was also named a WVC-First Team selection in 2003 and was named the WVC Division II Libero of the Year last season.
Phil Brace was named All-WVC Division II First Team last season and Dave Pautz was a member of the 2004 Division I WVC All-Tournament team when he helped the Titans to the WVC Division I title. This year he has stepped down to hit right side for Division II after playing Division I last year as a defensive specialist. Mike Callaway and Brandon Weimann are also returning Division II starters from last season. Chris Schinner is the lone newcomers to this year's Division II squad.
This year's team ran the table at the junior varsity play date and turned some heads at the University of Iowa Classic by taking fifth place out of 23 teams. The Titans beat the #1 and #5 ranked teams in the NIRSA Division II and took Lakeland College to three games before losing 15-12 in the deciding game.
