Oshkosh II Wins in Four (3-29-06)
The UW-Oshkosh men's Division II volleyball team defeated Northland Baptist Bible College 30-21, 33-31, 27-30, 31-29 in a match held on Tuesday (March 28) in Dunbar.
Leading 17-16 in game one, UW-Oshkosh's Brandon Weimann (Sr. - Racine) scored seven straight points to give the Titans a 24-16 advantage. UW-Oshkosh coasted from there for the nine-point victory as the Titans slammed down 19 kills in the stanza, including six by Chris Schinner (Fr. - Homestead).
Game two was close throughout as neither team held more than a three-point cushion. Tied 11 times, UW-Oshkosh starved off match point twice at 29-28 and 30-29 before scoring the last three points for the 2-0 game lead. Schinner and Phil Brace (Sr. - Madison) had five kills in the game as the Titans managed 19 kills again.
The Pioneers closed the gap to 2-1 as the Titans missed seven serves in the third game. "Our offense was fine throughout the match," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "But they played some awesome defense and keep throwing the ball back at us. That is the best I have seen them play in four years." Weimann had six kills in the game to lead the Titans.
Northland Baptist Bible College was on the brink of forcing a fifth game when Josh Groh (Sr. - Menomonee Falls) delivered some clutch serving to close the match out. After a side out to close the Pioneers lead to 29-26, Groh connected on five straight serves to give the Titans a nail-biting 31-29 win. Schinner tallied seven kills in the game and Mike Callaway (So. - Waukesha) had two kills during the late game run.
For the match Schinner led the team with 18 kills in only three games hitting and added nine digs. Weimann and Brace each had 16 kills and Callaway finished in double digit kills with 13 smack-downs. Jim Hall (Fr. - Appleton) had 13 digs and Brace and Brian Sigrist (Sr. - West Allis) added nine digs as the team scooped up 50 in the match. Sigrist added 58 assists and a career-high four blocks.
"It was a fun match with a great atmosphere," added Schaefer. "Dave Herron's teams always play hard and make you earn every point you get. The relationship the Titans and Pioneers have built over the years is a special one and I know my guys mark their calendars every year when we get to go up there. I think they are going to be a team to be reckoned with at the WVC championships."
