Oshkosh II Sweeps Lakeland (3-24-06)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team swept host Lakeland College II 30-28, 30-22, 33-31 in a match held on Thursday (March 23) in Sheboygan to remain undefeated against Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division II foes this season. The Titans only loss on the season is to Lakeland College's Division I team in the quarterfinals of the University of Iowa tournament.
After falling behind 5-0 to start the match, UW-Oshkosh (18-1-1) took a close game one by registering 21 kills on 43 attempts and tallying 10 digs. Phil Brace (Sr. - Madison) and Brandon Kirkland (Sr. - Racine) each had five kills to lead the Titans. Brandon Weimann (Sr. - Racine) added four kills and two blocks.
After only committing three hitting errors in game two for the easy victory, UW-Oshkosh held on for the sweep despite 10 hitting miscues in the third stanza. Chris Schinner (Fr. - Homestead) had half of his eight kills in the game.
Weimann finished with 10 kills and Nathan Malewiski (Jr. - New Franken) added nine kills. Kirkland, despite running a 5-1 offense finished with nine kills and dished out 35 assists. Jordan Jung (Sr. - Muskego) added eight digs in two games played and Brian Sigrist (Sr. - West Allis) scooped up five digs.
"Matches like this will help us get ready for nationals," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We pulled together to win the tight games and still are not at full strength. Remaining focused and preparing ourselves for the WVC championships will put us in the correct mindset for the big prize which starts in two weeks (NIRSA Division III championships).
