Oshkosh Clinches WVC Regular Season Title (3-9-06)
The UW-Oshkosh (24-0/10-0 WVC) men's volleyball team won a least a share of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference title with a 30-25, 30-20, 19-30, 30-25 win over UW-Whitewater in a match held on Wednesday (March 8) in Whitewater. With two contests remaining on their conference slate, UW-Oshkosh holds a two-game advantage over Lakeland College in the race for the title.
Playing without the services of Jeff Thomas (Sr. - Madison) and Mike Semrad (Sr. - Waukesha), UW-Oshkosh relied on the hitting of Nathan Sederberg (So. - Racine) and a balanced attack from the other front court players to pull out the victory.
The first game was close as neither team held more than a two-point advantage until the Titans pulled ahead 25-22 off of a service ace by James Bradley (So. - Racine). The two teams traded side outs before UW-Oshkosh built a four-point lead at 28-24 and won the game off of a service error by the Warhawks. The hosts were plagued with nine service errors in the first stanza.
Game two was all UW-Oshkosh as they connected on 16 kills with only four hitting errors for a .609 hitting percentage. Nathan Sederberg went a perfect five for five in kills and six UW-Oshkosh hitters slammed down at least two kills.
UW-Whitewater jumped out to leads of 9-3 and 15-6 in game three as the Titans hitting went cold. Collecting on only 11 kills, while committing 13 hitting errors UW-Oshkosh was forced to a fourth game. The Warhawks defensive pressure and better serving helped them to the easy third game victory.
Down 3-1 in game four, the Titans responded by scoring the next four points to take a 5-3 advantage. The Warhawks fought back to tie the game 9-9 and held a 15-13 lead. UW-Oshkosh went on an 8-3 scoring skein for a 21-16 lead and coasted to the fourth game win and their 24th consecutive victory to start the season.
UW-Oshkosh, who is currently ranked #1 in NIRSA Division I was led by Nathan Sederberg who had a career-high 18 kills and added three service aces. Bradley added 11 kills, Matt Lewin (Sr. - Cudahy) had nine kills and Dan Hessling (Fr. - Greenfield) finished with eight putdowns. Aaron Wayne (So. - Waukesha) provided seven digs and Andrew Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) dished out 50 assists and added three service aces.
"UW-Whitewater is a good team and plays well at home," said assistant coach Rick Kreiter. "They challenged us and our bench played well."
