Oshkosh II Goes Undefeated at MIVAs (2-20-06)
The UW-Oshkosh men's Division II volleyball team went undefeated at the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Division II round robin held on Saturday (Feb. 18) in East Lansing, Michigan. With the victories the Titans sit in first place in the conference and advance to 13-0 overall on the year.
UW-Oshkosh started the tournament defeating the University of Michigan II 25-13, 25-17. The Titans were led by Brandon Weimann (Sr. - Racine) and Nathan Malewiski (Jr. - New Franken) who each had eight kills. Chris Schinner (Fr. - Homestead) tallied six kills and Brandon Kirkland (Sr. - Racine) dished out 23 assists. Jordan Jung (Sr. - Muskego) picked up nine digs and Mike Callaway (So. - Waukesha) scooped up six digs and added two service aces.
The Titans, who compete in the Division III portion of the NIRSA national championship, soundly defeated Xavier University next, ranked seventeenth in Division II 25-18, 25-15. Phil Brace (Sr. - Madison) and Malewiski each had six kills and Weimann added five putdowns. Jung, a Division III NIRSA All-American last year, scooped up a tournament high 15 digs and Kirkland added seven digs and dished out 14 assists.
In third round action, UW-Oshkosh faced rival University of Illinois II, a team that beat the Titans in the finals of the MIVA Division II championships last season. UW-Oshkosh gained the early upper hand this season sweeping the Illini 25-19, 25-22. Schinner hit .375 on nine kills and Malewiski added six kills on a .444 hitting percentage. Kirkland added 16 assists and nine digs and Jung and Callaway each had five digs. Malewiski added a team best four service aces.
Next up for the Titans was Earlham College who put up little resistance in a 25-19, 25-22 defeat. Schinner and Malewiski again led UW-Oshkosh with six kills each and Jung and Callaway added four kills as the Titans had 25 kills in the two games.. Jung led the team with seven digs and Brian Sigrist (Sr. - West Allis) dished out 14 assists.
The final round of the play date led to another two game sweep for the Titans as they beat the Ohio State University II 25-21, 25-13. Malewiski, a Division III NIRSA All-American last season, had a strong overall game with seven kills, four service aces and four digs and Brace put down seven kills and had two service aces. Kirkland ended the match with 17 assists and eight digs.
"The guys have a lot of confidence right now," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "To sweep all of our opponents this weekend says a lot about our depth as a team right now. Once we get Dave Pautz (Sr. - New Berlin) back from injury we will be even tougher to beat. I know the team is looking forward to competing against some quality opponents at the University of Iowa tournament in the beginning of March."
