Lucky Number Seven (2-14-06)
The UW-Oshkosh (7-0/7-0 WVC) men's volleyball team won its seventh consecutive match to start the season, all in Wisconsin Volleyball Conference action in a contest held on Monday (Feb. 13) in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans were able to withstand a very good defensive UW-Whitewater (3-4/3-4 WVC) team and prevailed 30-20, 23-30, 30-21, 30-24 to remain undefeated on the season.
The Titans, ranked number two in the latest NIRSA Division I poll had little trouble in the first game as they hit .550 on 11 kills. James Bradley (So. - Racine) had five of those kills and Matt Lewin (Sr. - Cudahy) added four kills on four attempts.
Although UW-Oshkosh hit .454 in game two, they could not overcome eight serving errors and a tough Warhawk attack at the net. The Titans were held without a block in the stanza as UW-Whitewater had 18 kills in the game.
Tied at 13-13 in game two, Brandon Kirkland (Sr. - Racine) rattled off five points on his serve to give the Titans a five point cushion. The Titans maintained at least a four point lead the rest of the game to take a 2-1 game lead. Kirkland ended the game with four service aces.
Game four saw UW-Oshkosh pull out to a 19-14 advantage before UW-Whitewater went on a five point run to tie the game at 19-19. Fueled by three blocks by Mike Semrad, (Sr. - Waukesha) the Titans slowly pulled away to end the match.
Thomas led the Titans with 13 kills on 17 errorless attempts in three games played. Lewin added 13 kills and Semrad finished with 10 kills on a .714 hitting percentage. Nathan Sederberg (So. - Racine) scooped up 10 digs and Bradley finished with seven to led the UW-Oshkosh defense.
Andrew Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) led the offense with 45 assists and added three service aces and three blocks and Semrad had a match high seven stuffs, including three solo blocks in the first game.
