UW-Oshkosh III Wins in Five (2-9-06)
The UW-Oshkosh Division III men's volleyball team was extended to the five game but prevailed 30-27, 27-30, 26-30, 30-19, 15-12 in a match held on Wednesday (Feb. 8) in Kolf Sports Center. With the win the Titans even their overall mark to 4-4 on the year.
UW-Oshkosh started well with a match high 25 kills in the first game to account for all but five of their points. Kurt Breier (Jr. - Kimberly) and Trenton Hazen (So. - Racine) each had six kills in the game and Jim Hall (Fr. - Appleton) added five kills and four digs. The Titans hit .579 in the opening stanza with only three hitting errors.
Game two was a different story as UW-Oshkosh could only muster 10 kills while adding nine hitting errors in the narrow defeat. After a six point scoring run by Hall gave UW-Oshkosh a 21-15 lead, the hosts were outscored 15-6 to end the game. Josh Groh (Sr. - Menomonee Falls) had four kills in the game.
Inconsistent passing and hitting led to a 2-1 deficit as the Titans only managed six kills in the third game and had a match high ten hitting errors and six serving errors in the game. UW-Oshkosh quickly took the momentum back in game four building an 8-2 lead and 19-10 advantage. The Titans put down 12 team kills with only one hitting error for a .733 hitting percentage.
The deciding fifth game was a seesaw affair and both teams remained close in the early stages. UW-Oshkosh eventually pulled out to an 11-8 advantage behind a kill by Breier. After the Pioneers inched to within one at 11-10, the Titans got two more kills by Breier, both for side outs to serve for match point at 14-12. Breier delivered again with a serve ace for the win.
Breier had Groh each finished with 13 kills followed by Hall with 12 and Hazen with 11, all career-highs. Hazen and Breier each added five blocks and Groh chipped in with four. Hall added a career-best nine service aces and scooped up eight digs. Brian Sigrist ran the offense with 55 assists and Mark Beck (Fr. - Kimberly) added six digs.
