UW-Oshkosh II Starts Season With Win (1-27-06)
The UW-Oshkosh II volleyball team beat arch-rival Lakeland College II 30-18, 30-23, 30-19 in its season opener in a non-conference match held on Thursday (Jan. 26) in Kolf Sports Center.
The Titans started off strong building a 9-3 lead in the opening game forcing a Muskies timeout. From there Lakeland College would get no closer than five points as UW-Oshkosh build a 26-13 lead before settling for the 12-point cushion. Dan Hessling (Fr. - Greenfield) led the team with five kills in the first game.
The second game was tight throughout before UW-Oshkosh went on a mini-run behind two service aces by Jim Hall (Fr. - Appleton) to build an 18-15 lead. After a side out by the Lakeland College, Dave Pautz (Sr. - New Berlin) connected on one of his six consecutive kills to help put the Titans ahead to stay, The Titans hit .560 in the game on 18 kills and added seven service aces.
Similar to game one, UW-Oshkosh built leads of 5-0 and 11-3 to coast to the third game victory and a sweep of the visitors. Pautz again led the Titans with five kills and Brian Sigrist (Sr. - West Allis) added five digs. The Titans were held without a block in the stanza but scooped up 14 digs.
For the match Pautz finished with a match high 14 kills and added six digs and three blocks. Hessling registered 11 kills and three blocks and Brandon Weimann (Sr. - Racine) added 11 kills. Brandon Kirkland (Sr. - Racine) dished out 38 assists and had three service aces and Mike Callaway (So. - Waukesha) and Hall each had four service aces.
The Titans finished the match with 17 service aces, 8.5 blocks, 31 digs and 46 kills.
