| Tournament Coverage (4-3-10) |
Oshkosh I will try to get back to the Division I championship match for the 5th time in 6 years in Louisville, Kentucky for the NCVF National Volleyball Championships (Apr 1-3, 2010).
Oshkosh has had a successful year with a 3rd place finish at the Hoosier-Illini Classic, 1st place at the Las Vegas Open and 1st place at last weekend's MIVA Championships.
Oshkosh enters the Division I tournament as the #1 ranked team in the nation.
The Oshkosh II squad is coming off of a disappointing loss in the MIVA championship match to Illinois, but they are once again among the elite in Division III.
Oshkosh II enters the 24 team Division III tournament ranked #2.
The site will be updated as much as possible once the tournament starts on Thursday April 1, so check back often. Updates will also be provided for other Wisconsin schools.
Thursday
Oshkosh I didn't exactly breeze through pool play on day one with their #1 ranking, but they got the job done defeating George Mason University, Boston University and California State University-Fullerton in straight sets.
Their hiccup of the day was against Boston University when they dug a whole with missed serves and hitting erros.
Down 23-17 in game one, Nate Sederberg served the Titans back into a tie and they eventually pulled the win out 27-25.
In game two the Titans missed 10 more serves, but still won 25-21.
Today's power pool opponents are #9 Ohio State University (a rematch from last weekend) and #18 Cal Poly SLO.
Oshkosh II had an easy of a day in pool play. No opponent scored over 19 points in a game and everyone on the squad got some quality playing time.
They will play in a Championship power pool today against the winner of WVC member Northland International University and Indiana University "B" and the winner of Illinois State University "B" and Rutgers University-New Brunswick "B".
Friday
Oshkosh I came out blazing in their Championship power pool against #18 Cal Poly SLO. They crushed Cal Poly 25-19, 25-14.
In the second power pool match against #9 Ohio State University, Oshkosh started where they left off in the first match of the day, downing OSU 25-20 in the first set.
In set two OSU lost a lead late but was able to pull away from a 19-19 tie to claim the set 25-22.
In the deciding set Oshkosh couldn't have asked for a better start, racing to the side switch with an 8-2 lead.
A few missed serves and hitting errors later, the set was tied at 13-13.
Oshkosh had two match point serves but couldn't convert on either. The match ended with two hitting errors by the Titans.
Today's loss means that Oshkosh has lost the #1 seed in the Gold bracket tournament on Saturday.
Instead, they will have to face off against their Midwestern nemesis and another year-long favorite to win the championship, #3 University of Illinois.
It also places Oshkosh on the same side of the bracket as other WVC teams, #7 Lakeland College and #15 UW-Whitewater.
Oshkosh II had no problems at all holding their seed. They walloped Illinois State University "B" 25-18, 25-12 and Indiana University "B" 25-18, 25-20.
They will play in the Gold Division on Saturday morning at 8:15am against the 5th seeded Cal Poly SLO "B".
Saturday
Oshkosh I struggled in their opening Gold Division match against a team that they had beaten twice on the season, #3 University of Illinois. Illinois took advantage of the Oshkosh service and hitting errors and knocked the Titans out of the tournament early. Oshkosh and Illinois seem to meet up every year at the national tournament, but this marks the first time Oshkosh didn't prevail. They finished the tournament tied for 9th place.
Before the Division III tournament started everyone expected Oshkosh II and Illinois II to meet up in the championship match because both teams have proven all season long that they can hang with any team in the nation, no matter what division they were.
Neither team was upset in the tournament, so they ended up facing off for the fourth time this season in the championship match. Oshkosh II had beaten Illinois II in January, but lost to them the next two meetings, the last being a week ago in the MIVA JV championship.
Oshkosh had not lost a set all week coming into the match so their confidence was high. They pummeled the Fighting Illini in set one 25-18. Set two was a much tighter battle throughout, but the Titans pulled off the win by breaking a 23-23 tie with a service ace and a block.
It was the second time Oshkosh II made it to the Division III title match and the first time they won it.
