| 2012 NCVF Tournament - UWO Coverage (4-6-12) |
Saturday
Oshkosh I was in control all day until they were up match point in game 2 of the semi-final against #18 Cal Berkeley.
After winning the first game 25-18, Oshkosh started on a 6-0 run in game 2, but slowly lost the lead.
They regrouped and built the lead to 24-21, but couldn't put Cal away, losing 24-26.
Game 3 was once again in hand as they build the lead to 14-9, but Cal's defense tightened up as they dug everything, and Oshkosh lost a couple of tough calls, dropping the deciding set 16-18.
It will go down as one of the toughest loses in Oshkosh Volleyball history. They finish the year 48-4, two of which were to Cal Berkely.
On a brighter note, Oshkosh II won their second Division III national championship on Saturday. They played against the #1 seed Ohio State University "B" in the final and beat them handily in game one 25-19. Game two was a different story, as they dug a 20-12 hole, but managed to storm back and take the game 28-26. They finished the season with a 40-4 record.
Friday
For the second year in a row Oshkosh opened up their Championship pool against the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Oshkosh defeated Milwaukee without too much of an issue 25-20, 25-13.
The second match was against #10 Virginia Tech University, who badly needed a win to move to Gold. Oshkosh ran away with the first set 25-19 but needed a little extra playing time in the second set to finish them off 27-25.
Oshkosh will open up tomorrow's Gold bracket play with #6 University of California - Davis at 10:30am. The top 3 teams in the tournament all held their seeds, so rivals University of Illinois and University of Notre Dame are on the opposite side of the bracket.
Oshkosh II had to wake up early and win a challenge match against University of Texas "B" (25-18, 25-15) to play in a Championship pool. Once they got there, they didn't have too much of an issue downing University of Wisconsin - Madison "B" (25-16, 25-21) and University of Illinois "B" (25-20, 25-23).
Oshkosh II has earned a spot in the Gold bracket for tomorrow where they will face off with Penn State University "B".
Thursday
Oshkosh I absolutely crushed #25 University of Missouri in their opening match 25-12, 25-15. The Titans dominated at the net with 14 blocks in the match, 9 of which were in the first set. In the second match, Oshkosh's non-starters defeated #48 University of Minnesota 25-20, 26-24. The final match of the day was against #24 Cal Poly SLO. After dropping the first set, Oshkosh regrouped and pulled out the victory 20-25, 25-20, 15-6. Cal Poly was much better than their seed suggested, with a very good middle blocker and great defense and passing.
Oshkosh II also had a bump in the road, but didn't come out on the winning end of things. After crushing their first two opponents of the day, they lost a thriller against Indiana University "B" 27-29, 25-17, 13-15. After squandering a decent sized lead and losing the first set, they dominated in set 2, but came up short at the end of the deciding set. The loss puts them in an early morning challenge match against University of Texas "B" for the right to play in the (upper) power pool round.
Tuesday
Both Oshkosh squads were awarded with high seeds going into the 2012 NCVF National Championship Tournament held in Kansas City, MO on Apr 5-7, 2012.
Oshkosh I (41-3) regained the #1 national ranking and will try to repeat as national champions. Oshkosh returns all of their starters from last year's championship team and they are fresh off of winning the MIVA and WVC Championships. The Titans will open up with #25 University of Missouri, University of Minnesota and #24 Cal Poly SLO on Thursday.
The Oshkosh II squad (32-3) will look to return to the Division III national championship for the second time in three years. They were awarded the #2 seed in the tournament and are playing with a lot of confidence. There only loses on the season were to two Division I teams and the #1 seeded Ohio State University "B" team. First day opponents include: San Jose State University "B", University of Southern California "B" and Indiana University "B".
