The Titans finished the season 52-5, won its fifth consecutive Midwest Ten Conference title and captured their second straight Hoosier-Illini Classic title. In 2006 the Titans had perhaps one of the most dominating seasons in the history of NIRSA Division I volleyball as they went 56-1 and won their first ever national title. Losing only one match all season, UW-Oshkosh won its sixth WVC state championship, its fourth consecutive Midwest Ten Conference title and won the Hoosier-Illini Classic for the first time since 1997.

Before the 2002 season, Schaefer served a dual role as both the starting setter on the UW-Oshkosh team and head coach. In 2000, he led the team to the WVC title for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time. In 2001, he garnered All-WVC first-team honors and was named as a WVC all-star for the second consecutive season. Schaefer was also named All-Midwest Ten Conference honorable mention.
Schaefer also serves as member of the WVC advisory board. As a member, he oversees the daily existence of the conference. Along with conference commissioner Jason Smith, other coaches in the league make the WVC one of the most successful and organized conferences in the nation. Each year the WVC sends one of the highest contingents of teams competing at the NIRSA national tournament in various divisions.
Through Schaefer direction, the UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team takes pride in knowing it is one of the most successful and organized in the nation. From the annual alumni weekend to the end-of-the-year banquet, UW-Oshkosh gives young men the opportunity to play collegiate volleyball.
Schaefer serves also as the UW-Oshkosh women's varsity head coach and assistant sport information director, positions he has had since the remaining 16 games of the 2004 season.
In 2006, UW-Oshkosh posted a 32-6 record, won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for a second straight season and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament.
In 2005, Schaefer led the Titans to a 36-5 record, a share of the WIAC title and a second round appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. Picked to finish seventh in the WIAC, Schaefer was named the WIAC Coach of the Year and the Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
"I have a unique opportunity at UW-Oshkosh," said Schaefer. "One of my goals came true when I also became the head coach at UW-Oshkosh for women's volleyball. The administration at UW-Oshkosh is very supportive of my love of coaching both programs. My predecessors laid the foundation for UW-Oshkosh to be successful and I am proud to have taken our teams to the highest level."
