UW-Oshkosh II Wins Consolation Championship at Las Vegas Open (3-19-17)
UW-Oshkosh II finished with its highest result in team history when the Titans finished ninth to win the gold consolation championship at the prestigious Las Vegas Open on Friday and Saturday (March 17-18) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UW-Oshkosh II began pool play by dismantling the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs, 25-10, 25-9, squeaking by the University of Nevada – Las Vegas, 25-22, 25-22 and losing to #12 San Diego State University, 25-17, 32-30 to finish in second place.

In the first match of the tournament the Titans were led by Mike Starzec (Sr. – Buffalo Grove, Ill.) with six kills and John Collins (So. – New Berlin) and Mitch Lahmann (Sr. – Wauwatosa) added five put aways. Adam Langraf (Sr. – Kenosha) set up 14 assists and provided three service aces and four digs, Starzec led the team with five blocks and Tony Mack (Sr. – Muskego) had three blocks.

In the win over the Rebels, Mack had a monster match slamming down 16 kills in 28 attempts as the Titans had 37 kills in the two sets. Landgraf assisted on 30 of those kills and had seven digs and Sam Moua (Sr. – Appleton) had 10 digs and three service aces. Eli Miller (So. – Burlington) scooped up five digs and Lahmann and Starzec had six kills.

Against San Diego State University, UW-Oshkosh II took a 22-19 lead in set two but could not hold on to force a deciding third set. Mack provided nine kills and Moua had a tournament-high 18 digs. Landgraf piled up 29 assists and added eight digs and three blocks. Starzec totaled six kills and three blocks and Melton and Lahmann each had five kills. The Titans only had two receiving errors against the hard serving Aztecs.

In the first round of the gold playoffs, a round that UW-Oshkosh II reached for the first time, the Titans lost to #13 Sacramento State University, 25-17, 19-25, 15-11 to drop into the consolation bracket. The Titans did not have a receiving error in the match, but were plagued with 18 hitting errors. Mack had eight kills and Melton and Starzec each had six kills. Landgraf dialed up 25 assists and five digs and Melton had three blocks.

In the first round of consolation UW-Oshkosh II dominated California State University Fullerton 25-13, 25-19 behind 11 digs by Moua. Landgraf dished out 20 assists, Starzec led the team with six kills and Melton had three blocks. Alex Basting (So. – Franklin) had two solo blocks and Lahmann and Starzec each had two block assists. Ryan Albers (Jr. – Appleton) had four kills and four digs and Collins finished with five digs.

In the next round UW-Oshkosh II had little trouble with the University of California Davis in a 25-17, 25-17 victory. Collins led the team with seven kills, Albers and Moua had five digs each and Landgraf tallied 23 assists.

In the gold consolation championship match UW-Oshkosh II beat one of the highest ranked NCVF Division I ranked teams in its history as it bested #7 Air Force Academy, 22-25, 25-17, 15-12. Lahmann had 11 kills, nine digs and two service aces and Moua led the team with 15 digs. Basting and Collins each had six kills and Landgraf amassed 30 assists.

Landgraf became the first UW-Oshkosh II player named to the All-tournament team announced at the conclusion of the tournament.
